My Journey

Ancient Roots. Modern Living. Timeless Aloha.

Urban Kanaka was born from a lifetime of service, healing, learning, and beginning again—and from my belief that the wisdom that grounds us can still guide the way we live today.

Aloha, I’m Jaylene

I am an Asian-Pacific Islander with Hawaiian, Asian, Caucasian, Polynesian, and Māori roots, a United States Army Veteran, a Licensed Massage Therapist, an educator, a writer, and a lifelong student of healing.

I have also completed my Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and continue to prepare for the next stage of my professional licensure journey.

Those titles are part of my story, but they are not the whole of it.

My journey has been shaped by the places I have lived, the people I have served, the cultures that have grounded me, and the many seasons that have required me to change course. It has taught me that healing rarely follows a straight line. Sometimes it is a return. Sometimes it is a release. Sometimes it begins when we finally become still enough to listen.

Urban Kanaka grew from everything I learned along the way.

Where My Understanding of Healing Began

Long before I understood natural healing as a profession, I knew it as a family tradition.  Healing practices and wisdom were passed down to me through my family, and as a child, I experienced care first hand through Samoan fofo and Hawaiian lomilomi.  Those early experiences taught me that healing is more than a technique.  It is an expression of love, presence, connection, and responsibility for the well-being of another.

Touch can communicate safety. Presence can restore dignity. Compassion can reach places that words cannot. Healing is influenced not only by what hurts, but also by the burdens we carry, the environments we inhabit, the nourishment we receive, and the connections that remind us we belong.

These early lessons stayed with me and eventually led me into professional massage therapy. As a Licensed Massage Therapist, I have had the privilege of working with people experiencing pain, physical limitations, stress, injury, and profound life changes.

Each person taught me something. Each body carried a story.

Over time, I wanted to understand more—not only about muscles and movement, but about the deeper relationships among the body, mind, emotions, environment, and spirit.

That calling led me to study acupuncture and Chinese medicine, first at the master’s level and later at the doctoral level. It expanded the way I understood health while reinforcing something I had sensed from the beginning: the human body is not a collection of unrelated parts. We are whole beings, and meaningful care must recognize the whole person.

A Life Shaped by Service

Before Urban Kanaka, there were more than twenty-one years of military service in the Hawaiʻi Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve.

I served as a Human Resources Sergeant and instructor, supported Soldier readiness, taught Army personnel courses, and participated in missions that brought me alongside people from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life. I eventually retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant.

The military taught me discipline, responsibility, perseverance, and the importance of completing the mission. More importantly, it taught me to look beyond paperwork, positions, and uniforms to see the human being standing behind them.

Service is not simply something we perform. It is a way of carrying responsibility for one another.

That understanding continues to shape how I approach wellness, education, leadership, and business today.

The Journey Was Not a Straight Path

My story is not one of uninterrupted success or perfect certainty.

Like many people, I have known seasons of physical pain, financial uncertainty, professional change, exhaustion, and rebuilding. I have questioned my direction. I have carried responsibilities that sometimes left very little room for myself. I have had to release plans that no longer fit and find the courage to begin again without knowing exactly where the road would lead.

Those seasons did not make me less qualified to speak about wellness. They made my understanding of wellness more honest.

I learned that resilience does not mean pretending everything is fine. Strength is not measured by how silently we suffer. Sometimes courage means asking for help. Sometimes healing means resting. Sometimes the most important step forward is remembering who we were before the world told us who we were supposed to become.

Urban Kanaka was created for those moments.

Why I Created Urban Kanaka

The name Urban Kanaka is an intentional play on words.

“Urban” represents the modern world—fast-moving, demanding, innovative, and sometimes disconnected from the things that keep us grounded.

“Kanaka” is a Hawaiian word referring to a person, a human being, or humankind.

Together, the name reflects a question at the heart of this work:

How do we remain fully human while navigating modern life?

I created Urban Kanaka as a place where tradition and science can sit at the same table. It is where ancestral values can inform contemporary living without becoming frozen in the past. It is where curiosity is welcomed, knowledge is shared responsibly, and wellness is understood as something deeper than trends, products, or appearances.

This is a place for exploring how we care for ourselves, one another, and the world around us.

The values of aloha, mālama, kuleana, lōkahi, and pono guide this journey: compassion, care, responsibility, harmony, and the courage to live with integrity.

Although Urban Kanaka is deeply influenced by my Hawaiian and Māori roots, its invitation extends to anyone seeking greater wholeness, purpose, balance, and connection.

A Home for the Whole Journey

Urban Kanaka brings together the many currents of my life.

Here, hydration and emerging wellness science meet traditional perspectives on balance and vitality. Herbs, teas, and holistic practices are approached with curiosity, respect, and care. Stories offer guidance for the seasons when facts alone are not enough. Thoughtfully created products carry meaning as well as beauty.

Every part of Urban Kanaka is connected by one purpose: to help people live with greater awareness, intention, and compassion.

I do not believe wellness should be built on fear or perfection. I believe it should help us understand ourselves more clearly, make informed choices, and create lives that feel more deeply aligned with who we are.

Healing is not always about becoming someone new.

Sometimes it is about returning to yourself.

The Journey Continues

Urban Kanaka is the sum of everything I have carried with me: my cultural roots, my years in uniform, my healing hands, my education, my questions, my detours, and my hope for what is still possible.

It is not a finished story because I am not a finished story.

I am still learning. Still growing. Still navigating. Still discovering how ancient wisdom can help us meet the challenges of modern living with greater courage, clarity, and aloha.

Wherever you may be in your own journey, you are welcome here.

May you find knowledge that strengthens you, stories that steady you, and reminders that you are neither too late nor too far from the life calling you forward.

E komo mai.

Welcome to Urban Kanaka.

E mālama pono.
Take good care.
